Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s thrilling conclusion takes the characters literally out of time and space, but Indy’s voyage to the third century B.C. was not the only option available. James Mangold originally considered an alternate ending for the film.
In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, when viewers first encountered Indy, he was a man out of time. Now an exhausted professor at Hunter College, he was contemplating divorce. Even when his precocious, albeit criminal, goddaughter Helena Shaw arrived, he could not have been less enthusiastic.
He engaged in a frantic search for the dial of Archimedes if only to prevent it from falling into the clutches of the Nazis, who intend to use it to win World War II. This conflict’s unexpected conclusion led him to the Battle of Syracuse, where he met Archimedes.
By adding such a remarkable flourish, Mangold demonstrated his ability to continue the Indiana Jones franchise. But before this conclusion materialized, he labored over a different one.
In an interview with Inverse, Mangold said –
“The other interesting thing was that one of the things I thought about was even if we did travel in time, would Mads’ theory be right and they’d land in Nazi Germany? And the last act of the movie would be Indie trying to foil Mads’ plan?”
In the end, this was Dr. Voller’s original intention. He intended to return to World War II in order to assassinate Hitler because he believed the dictator was responsible for the war’s loss. But regardless of how thrilling the final act may have been, Mangold ultimately decided against it. That was not the film he intended to create.
He was more interested in an emotionally compelling voyage for the Indiana Jones characters than a straightforward spy movie. In this regard, his instincts guided him appropriately. The remainder of the film centered on Indy’s emotional journey after the film’s intriguing villain and his henchmen were sacrificed in a plane accident after failing to land in Germany.

Since Indiana Jones will not be replaced, a simple conflict with a recurring adversary would not do justice to the film franchise. Fans observe Indy recognize that he is still required and reconcile with his estranged wife. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny contains all of the series’ trademark emotions and revelations.
