Alan Wake 2 Release Date: When It Will Air, What to Expect and More!

The sequel to the survival horror game Alan Wake will be released in 2023 as part of the Remedy Connected Universe. The author-turned-nightmare-maker Alan Wake returns in the highly anticipated sequel Alan Wake 2, and developer Remedy Entertainment is pulling out all the stops.

Director of creative development Sam Lake recently told GamesRadar+ that the idea has grown more ambitious and more unique. After years of trying to put this thing into existence, which has only increased our anticipation.

In fact, Remedy has confirmed that Alan Wake 2: The Final Chapter, a terrifying survival horror experience, will be one of the most anticipated video games of 2023. Over a decade has passed since we fought back against the darkness in one of the best Xbox 360 games, so you’ll want to keep reading to find out everything we know about Alan Wake 2 so far while we wait for a release date and more gameplay details.

When Will Alan Wake 2 Be Released?

The release year for Alan Wake 2 has been confirmed to be 2023 by developer Remedy Entertainment. The developer has not provided a clear release date but has promised updates on the project regularly over the next few months. Since the original Alan Wake game came out in 2010, Remedy is under no pressure to rush the release of the long-awaited sequel.

Alan Wake 2 platforms

So far, the PlayStation 5, Xbox One S and PC have all been confirmed for Alan Wake 2. Since Epic Games is publishing the new survival horror game, Remedy has also confirmed that Alan Wake 2 will launch for PC via the Epic Games Store. Given the next-gen technology powering the 2023 release, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Alan Wake 2 won’t be coming to PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch.

Alan Wake 2 trailer

The Alan Wake 2 trailer provides only a taste of what the full game will offer. We see what appears to be a gruesome crἰme scene in the woods, a wet view of New York City and the (fictitious) subway stop of Caldera Street, a flash to what might be Bright Falls and our hero, who looks a lot like Bradley Cooper on a bad day, proclaiming, “this is not the story you want it to be.

The following is a list of the video clips that can be seen in the official trailer for Alan Wake 2:

This narrative will devour your soul. There are countless ways this narrative might end. Those easily startled should be warned that there is a brief moment when Alan’s face seems pallid and bloodied as if he received a lump of coal in his stocking and now plans to eat Santa as revenge.

Alan Wake 2 Gameplay

Originally scheduled for Summer 2022, Remedy has decided to push back the debut of the first gameplay from Alan Wake 2 until a later date. So why is that? Instead of focusing on making a perfect demo, the team would rather keep working on the full game.

 Creative director Sam Lake says-

“Everything with Alan Wake 2 development is going really well. We are deep in production, have a lot of material, and a great deal of the game is playable. But we’ve been talking for the past couple of months and have come to the decision here at Remedy, along with our wonderful publisher Epic Games, that we will not be showing anything big this summer.”

“To create a proper, polished demo or a trailer takes a lot of effort and it’s several months of work that could take away from development.”

“We feel that we have momentum going and we want to make sure we are creating the best and first, survival horror game for Remedy. We don’t want to take the team away from that focus, so we’re going to keep going and making a great game experience and unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer for a demo and trailer.”

The Plot of Alan Wake 2

This is all we know about Alan Wake’s possible return at this time. Lake calls it “Remedy’s first survival horror game” and a “deep, layered mystery.” The development team saw the original as more of an action game than a horror game.

Alan Wake 2 Release Date

Warning, this article contains Alan Wake spoilers from the first book. Alan sacrificed himself by entering the “Dark Place” at the end of the first game in order to rescue his wife. Later DLC episodes, “The Signal” and “The Writer” expand on Alan’s understanding of the Dark Place’s reasoning and motivations; he eventually escapes by facing off against “Irrational Alan” and penning the novel Return.

Could Alan’s problems in the second book involve that book? Although Remedy is cagey about specifics, it appears that the studio has great plans for the game.

 Lake says-

“Leading up to the announcement, our internal codename for the sequel has been Project Big Fish.David Lynch has said: ‘Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper.’ Alan Wake 2 is our big fish. We are diving deeper than ever, into an ocean of darkness.”
