What Happened to Neel Acharya?

On Sunday, the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office was informed about a possible dead body, at around 11:30 AM. Meanwhile, the Cororner’s office officials responded to 500 Allison Road in West Lafayette where they discovered a college-aged boy dead outside at the Purdue campus outside Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories. The interim head of Purdue University’s Computer Science Department confirmed the death of Neel Acharya through an email sent to the department.

Chris Clifton wrote, “It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students Neel Acharya has passed away. The leadership in the Department of Computer Science expresses our profound sorrow for his passing. I am deeply saddened by his loss. My condolences go out to his friends family and all affected”. He was pursuing a Computer Science and Data Science course at Purdue University in Indiana. Commendably, Neel Acharya scored 97.2 percent in ICSE exams in Class 10 and 95 percent marks in Class 12. He also did an internship at Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd and worked at Lydnow Edutech Pvt Ltd as a Project Intern. Notably, he took part in the Cozmo Clench competition at Techfest 2018-19 organized by IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). According to Neel’s LinkedIn profile, he was the 2022 passed out of St. Mary’s School in Pune.

The news of Neel Acharya’s death surfaced a day after his mother shared a missing post on social media. Goury Acharya, Neel’s mother stated “Our son Neel Acharya has been missing since yesterday January 28. He is studying at Purdue University in the US. He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off at Purdue University. We are looking for any info on him. Please help us if you know anything.”

However, the Consulate General of India in Chicago responded to Goury Acharya’s post and ensured that the Consulate was in touch with the authorities of Purdue University. The official post of India’s Consulate General in Chicago, shared on X formerly Twitter reads,  “The Consulate is in touch with Purdue University authorities and also with Neel’s family. The consulate will extend all possible support and help.”

The news of Neel Acharya’s death surfaced after two other Indian students were found dead in the United States in Connecticut on January 15, 2023. Within two weeks, three Indian students were found dead in the United States, which raised a huge concern for overseas students studying at different universities in the US.
