Sony Pictures has just unveiled the first look at Kraven the Hunter, its upcoming Spider-Man spin-off – the most recent installment in their formerly titled Spider-Man Universe of Marvel Characters. Aaron Taylor-Johnson portrays the title character, a Russian nobleman who migrated to the United States and became a hunter obsessed with pursuing large game, before making Spider-Man his golden goose.
The Red-Band trailer displays more of the action we’ve come to expect from similarly themed Marvel-based outings from Sony, such as Venom and Morbius, other films based on Spider-villains, although this one is carrying a somewhat harder edge than the previous two, judging by the tone of the footage displayed in this first look at the project.
Taylor-Johnson is depicted in the savannahs pursuing the large game animals we have come to expect; one lion is in for a rough ride. However, the villain, revealed to be Rhino, is the largest game of all. Rhino was most recently portrayed by Paul Giamatti as a comedic character in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man series. This time, we see a significantly more accurate representation of the rampaging antagonist.

J.C. Chandor, who is best known for directing the Netflix blockbuster Triple Frontier as well as the survival film All is Lost and the criminal drama A Most Violent Year is the film’s director. Christopher Abbott is rumored to have been cast as the film’s primary antagonist, The Foreigner. Also starring are Alessandro Nivola, Levi Miller, and Russell Crowe.
What is the Plot of Kraven the Hunter?
The film chronicles the exploits of Kraven, also known as Sergei Kravinoff. While specific plot details are shrouded in secrecy, the film will chronicle Kraven’s travel to establish himself as the world’s foremost hunter, drawing inspiration from the immensely popular Marvel comic book character of the same name.

Spider-Man is typically Kraven’s principal target; however, given Spidey’s “heard about but not seen” status within his own extended universe, it seems unlikely that he will appear in this film. In addition, it was revealed at CinemaCon that Kraven the Hunter will bear an R rating, indicating a shift towards a darker and more obsessive narrative that is faithful to the character’s depiction in the comics.
