General Motors lays off another 200 UAW striking workers

Till now the strike of UAW is not over. The strike of UAW is still continuous. Now General Motors (GM) is laying off another 200 UAW striking workers. This was officially announced by GM on 9th October 2023, Monday. These layoffs are going to affect the auto major sixth plant. These layoffs are going to affect Detroit based on the auto makers’ sixth assembly plant and also the number of affected workers which has risen to around 2,300. GM has now also clarified that employees are not going to be expected to return till the strike ends and the issues are going to end when the issues with UAW are resolved.

On 9th October 2023, Monday, General Motors (GM) officially stated the layoffs of around 200 employees which are attributed to the UAW strike. Because of these layoffs, it is going to affect the auto major sixth plant. In the last week, the Detroit-based company has clarified that almost 2,100 workers have been impacted because of the UAW strike at the two assembly plants in Michigan and Missouri, with 18 parts distribution centers. As per the recent reports given by General Motors it has been shown that a big number of affected workers has grown to about 2,300, It includes 70 layoffs at the Lansing, Michigan, stamping plant, and 70 more at the Toledo, Ohio, Plant.

Recently, General Motors (GM) has also stated that the employees are not going to return the work till the issue with United Auto Workers (UAW) gets resolved. And now General Motors has also given a new offer. They have updated the offer which did not align with the 23% pay rise that has been suggested by Ford Motors. On 6th October 2023, Friday the UAW communicated with GM and now they had agreed to include the workers who are at the joint venture battery plants and are under the union contracts but on 9th October 2023, Monday there were no specific details provided.

The layoffs are across the board, The Stellantis which is the parent company of Chrysler officially stated on 9th October 2023, Monday that almost 570 additional workers in Indiana and Michigan are going to be furloughed and it has brought a total of 640. They have also attributed the decision to the impact of the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike because of the storage constraints. And now Ford Motors has disclosed the furloughing the another 70 employees in Michigan due to the UAW strike which has brought the overall count to 1,865.
