Destiny 2’s Players Have Gathered at the Tower to Pay Tribute to Lance Reddick

Destiny 2 players have been gathering in large numbers at the Tower to remember Lance Reddick, who died at the age of 60. When the news came out, Guardians started going to Commander Zavala, whose voice Reddick is known for, to pay their respects.

The Destiny community spread the news quickly, since Reddick was not only a big fan of the game but also sometimes talked to other players such as Commander Zavala on social media.

Even though the Tower is a bit quieter today, yesterday, Guardians were either standing in a circle around Zavala and using the “Humanity’s Sheild” emote to show that his character was bigger than life, or they were sitting with other Guardians at an impromptu candlelight vigil.

Do you know that Bungie has made it very hard to keep abusing the weekly dungeon rotation in Destiny 2? This takes away the easy way for players to farm high-end gear by using the Artifice armour bonanza:

On the /r/DestinyTheGame subreddit, the post about Reddick quickly became the second most popular post on all of Reddit, with many community members and former Bungie developers sharing their favorite memories of Zavala or Reddick himself.

Guardians were especially saddened by Reddick’s death because they had been playing with his character for the past nine years. Yesterday, when I went to different livestreams on Twitch, it seemed like that was all anyone was talking about.

On Twitter, too, almost everyone in the Destiny community was posting screenshots of the Tower or videos of all the Guardians who had come together to honor Zavala. Lance’s wife, Stephanie Reddick, wrote a message on his Twitter account to talk about his sudden death.

She also acknowledged the Destiny community by saying –

“…to the thousands of Destiny players who played in a special tribute to Lance, thank you. Lance loved you as much as he loved the game.”

Bungie also put out an official statement following the news stating that –

“Lance Reddick was an iconic presence on screen, in Destiny, and most importantly, in person. His love for our community shined through in Commander Zavala, in his uncompromising dedication to his craft, and out of the radiating kindness that touched those around him. To say he will be missed is a profound understatement, yet no less true. Rest in peace, Lance.”

Eyes up, Guardian, as Commander Zavala would say.
