He is in the news headlines but not for good causes. He attacked a US Rep’s husband with a hammer after breaking into his house at night. Reportedly, David DePape attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi with a hammer after breaking into their home in San Francisco. This act of David DePape resulted in his arrest and front-page headlines as he was found guilty of two counts of assaulting a federal official and attempting to kidnap a federal official. For the felony charges against David DePape, he could have a maximum sentence of 30 years and 20 years respectively.

This incident sent shockwaves through Washington. Reportedly, David DePape invaded Nancy’s San Fransico home to kidnap her and held her hostage but at that time she was in Washington while her husband Paul Pelosi was at home and tried to confront David DePape who was with a dangerous weapon at that time. Despite multiple warnings by David DePape, Paul Pelosi tried to confront him, which resulted in severe head injury to Paul.

The prosecutors argued that David DePape broke into the home of Pelosis with a hammer to kidnap former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and to hold her hostage. On the other hand, the defense, Jodi Linker argued that David DePape was the one who attacked the 83-year-old husband of Nancy Pelosi but his motivation for the attack did not match the charges against him. Jodi Linker argued “This case here is about the why, the why matters. This case is about whether David acted because of, on account of, Nancy Pelosi’s duties as a member of Congress. He didn’t,” Linker had argued to the jury. “And he only struck Paul Pelosi in a quick moment of despair because the police arrived and his larger plan was thwarted.”

While getting emotional, DePape gave a closer look at his motive to invade Nancy Pelosi’s home. David said he was there for Nancy and Paul was not on his target at all but when he found that Nancy was not at home. He said “I’m telling him, I have other targets, but if you stop me, I’ll go through you,” Recounting a conversation with Paul, adding that he then reacted and hit him “in the head,” because his plan was “completely ruined.”

Later police identified the attacker as DePape. Pelosi underwent surgery to fix his skull. David DePape was born David Wayne DePape in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada, in 1980. As of now, he has turned 44 years old in 2024. In California, David was adopted by Gene DePape and his then-wife. But he left them nearly two decades ago.
