Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani crossed the mark of $21 million in overseas markets including the UK, Middle East, and Canada. The film performed exceptionally well in the international market. Talking about the highest-grossing film of the year, Jawan starring Shah Rukh Khan set new records in the Gulf countries and Australia. The film earned more than $22 million. A film distributor and exhibitor named Sunny Khanna said, “Overseas markets are definitely improving, along with Indian business, but this is only for big star films. Post covid, even overseas audience has turned selective,”

Talking about the period drama film Gadar 2 starring Sunny Deol, collected more than 500 crore in the domestic market but this film could not attract the audience in the overseas market as it only collected Rs 18.03 crore overseas on its first weekend. Not to mention, Gadar 2 only resonated with the audience of India because of its plot that revolved around India-Pakistan relations. But Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani traded very well in overseas markets because it offered song, dance, color, and culture, as well as star faces.

Notably, three out of the top eight highest-grossing Indian films in the UK market, have been directed by Karan Johar. The other two are Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. For the tenth week, Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani continues its glorious run across 20 screens in the UK. In the Gulf, it clocks around $4.25 million, or double the earnings that any Indian film that was released after the pandemic except Pathaan and Jawan. The other major market Australia should end with collections of $1.20 million (A$1.82 million).
