Adani Group Declines Allegations, Says Not Involved In Construction of Silkyara-Barkot Tunnel

Since a tunnel in Uttarkashi collapsed, a lot of stories have surfaced on the internet. One of those stories claimed that a subsidiary of the Adani Group was involved in the construction of the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel which collapsed earlier this month. Recently, the Adani Group issued a statement regarding the story that is damaging the conglomerate’s image by claiming it was responsible for the now-collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand. While addressing the rumors the conglomerate stated it held shares in a company that constructed the tunnel as nefarious but none of its subsidiaries were involved in the construction of the tunnel in Uttarakhand. The former Member of Rajya Sabha Subramaniam Swamy took to his Twitter account and wrote, “This Uttarakhand tunnel was built by which private company? Who were its shareholders when the collapse took place? Was one of them Adani Group? I am asking not implying.” After this, Adani Group found itself embroiled in a big problem when people started calling Adani Group to be responsible for the collapse of the tunnel.

A spokesperson of the Gautam Adani conglomerate said, “It has come to our notice that some elements are making nefarious attempts to link us to the unfortunate collapse of a tunnel in Uttarakhand. We strongly condemn these attempts and those behind them.” The company further added that they clarified with the utmost emphasis that neither Adani Group nor any of its subsidiaries have any involvement (direct or indirect) in the tunnel’s construction. The statement reads, “We also clarify that we do not own or hold any shares in the company involved in the tunnel’s construction. At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the trapped workers and their families,”

On November 12, 2023, a portion of the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand collapsed after a landslide. A total of 41 workers got trapped 260 meters inside the tunnel.
