Zelda Tears of the Kingdom: Nintendo is developing and publishing an action-adventure game titled The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is the upcoming sequel to 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and will be released for the Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s development began in 2017. At E3 2019, the game’s sequel to Breath of the Wild was revealed. Nintendo originally planned to release the game in 2022, as shown in a trailer at E3 2021 but pushed back the release to the second quarter of 2023.
Details, including the game’s title and release date of May 12, 2023, were unveiled during a Nintendo Direct presentation in September 2022. Even before the official name was revealed, many fans were already calling it Breath of the Wild 2.
Both Breath of the Wild’s director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma are returning. The idea for the game came about when the developers realized they would have to scrap some of the DLC for Breath of the Wild. The player can now glide between floating islands above Hyrule, much like in Skyward Sword from The Legend of Zelda series (2011).
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Release Date
Nintendo revealed the release window for the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3 2021. Spring of 2023 is now the target date.
The developer announced the game’s official release date of May 12, 2023, during September 2022’s Nintendo Direct. During that presentation, Nintendo also revealed Tears of the Kingdom as the game’s official name.
Furthermore, Nintendo has confirmed the correct pronunciation of the name. As a heteronym, “tear” could have been used to mean either “the salty liquid produced by the eyes” or “the damage from being torn.”
Following the presentation in September, Nintendo clarified that the name is meant to be pronounced like the fluid that results from crying, /tir/. Therefore, the sad name alludes to a mournful monarchy.
This is similar to the last game, which used the formula “bodily function plus the setting.” The presentation was not broadcast live in the United Kingdom, presumably out of respect for Queen Elizabeth, who had recently passed away.
DID YOU KNOW…
That the wait time between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be the longest we had to wait for the next original Zelda title?

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Platforms
In contrast to the original Breath of the Wild, which came out on Switch and Wii U, the sequel will only be available on Switch.
Since the original Breath of the Wild suffered from frame rate issues in certain areas, many fans have probably hoped that the enhanced Switch model, dubbed the “Switch Pro,” would be available in time for the game’s release.
With only a few months left until launch, it’s hard to imagine Nintendo surprising fans with a brand new powerful platform.
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Trailer
During its E3 2019 presentation, Nintendo unveiled the first trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The mysterious video depicts Link and Zelda (with shorter hair) exploring a vast underground complex.
As the two explorers move further into the cavern, shadowy strands wind their way through the space. After exploring for a while, Link and Zelda discover what appears to be the cause of the shadows: a male body embalmed in Gerudo garb and jewelry, likely Ganondorf.
There is what looks like a hand made of light clutching the corpse’s chest. After Link pulls the hand out, the floor beneath him and Zelda collapses, the mysterious hand of light catches Zelda by the wrist as she falls, and the body seemingly comes back to life; the camera cuts rapidly to a series of out-of-order shots showing the aftermath.
Finally, the trailer closes with a short scene of Hyrule Castle being raised into the air. At E3 2021, Nintendo showed off more of the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel. The trailer established that you could travel around Hyrule and the skies above it.

Several plots, gameplay details, and other hints about the highly anticipated sequel can be found in the trailer below. Look for yourself and start speculating. In our in-depth analysis of the game’s trailer, we’ve compiled features we expect to see in the final product.
In September 2022, Nintendo announced the official title and release date for Tears of the Kingdom and a brief but compelling trailer. At the outset, the trailer pans over some ruins with what appears to be a godlike figure surrounded by seven tear-shaped runes (the ones from the title, perhaps).
Following this, images of Princess Zelda holding a man’s hand and what appear to be goblin-like monsters from the original Breath of the Wild are shown. After a brief introduction to the game’s setting and characters, the trailer shifts to gameplay, the following Link as he glides through the air and explores what appears to be a devastated Hyrule.
