Zelda Tears of the Kingdom 2023: While Princess Zelda’s involvement has been inconsistent throughout the series, many fans are hoping that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom would follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and feature Zelda in a minor role.
There was anticipation that Princess Zelda would play a larger part in Link and Tears of the Kingdom after her role in Breath of the Wild was divided between flashbacks to her incarceration with Ganon.
However, as the game’s release date draws closer, it seems increasingly doubtful that she will finally break with precedent.
In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, many fans have speculated that Zelda may either become a playable character for the first time in the franchise or even die.
Tears of the Kingdom appears to be focused on Link, a renewed war with a revived Ganondorf, and potentially revelatory secrets unearthed throughout Hyrule and the sky, despite long-running hopes among many fans that Zelda will sooner or later take on a more engaged role in the series named after her.
Details like Link’s arm and the brief glimpses of Zelda in the trailers suggest she will play a supporting role once again in the next installment.
In Every Zelda Game, Link Is the Star
In reference to the incongruity between the series’ name and the fact that Link is the protagonist, the name “Zelda” being mistakenly applied to him by those unfamiliar with the series has become a running humor on the internet.
However, this proves that Link, and not Zelda, has always been the series’ protagonist, as the tale is conveyed through his eyes and he has the most agency in each game.
In light of the fact that several of Zelda’s direct sequels have followed tales that omit Princess Zelda entirely, such as Majora’s Mask and Link’s Awakening, it is quite improbable that Tears of the Kingdom will suddenly reverse this.

The focus of Tears of the Kingdom appears to be on Link, and not just because he is the protagonist and the game’s protagonist. The plot may have a direct bearing on Link and his relationship with Ganondorf.
One clue that Tears of the Kingdom might be about Link fighting an infection of evil or completing a goal placed upon him by those who imprisoned Ganondorf away is his corrupted arm.
Furthermore, Ganondorf’s return could indicate that Tears of the Kingdom is returning to Zelda tradition, perhaps with the Triforce and Master Sword taking on greater significance.
Therefore, any fan theory involving the princess would be doomed to failure if we went back to doing things the old way.
The Ending of Zelda’s Story Has Been Foreshadowed
In true Zelda fashion, the princess is largely ignored for the duration of the game. As Link’s girlfriend, Princess Zelda is always important to the plot, but she normally stays behind while he goes on his quests.
In Breath of the Wild, Zelda was imprisoned in Hyrule Castle by Calamity Ganon, and in every other game, Zelda gets kidnapped by the main villain, be it Agahnim in A Link to the Past or Ganondorf in The Wind Waker.
Trailers for Tears of the Kingdom have suggested that Zelda, after being separated from Link once again, may also be absent for a significant portion of the game.

A scene in which Zelda falls over a chasm in a setting that looks a lot like the caves shown in other trailers appears briefly in one that was published in 2021 during E3.
It’s possible that Zelda’s capture by Ganondorf is only set up in the game’s early going, despite the fact that some speculation compares Tears of the Kingdom to Majora’s Mask as a darker direct successor and suggests players may see Zelda fridged.
It’s possible that the plot will explain how Ganondorf was mummified beneath Hyrule and how Link can fight him, but Zelda will certainly end up playing the role of damsel in distress once more.
