Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla, or just Valhalla, is a Jeb Stuart-created historical drama. Production continued in County Wicklow, Ireland, for this sequel to History’s Vikings.

The series is set a century after the events of the Vikings and tells the story of the events leading up to and including the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, which is often considered the turning point in the history of the Viking Age.

Premiered on February 25, 2022, the first season contained eight episodes. The show was renewed for a second and third season in March 2022, following the announcement of an additional 24 episodes in November 2019. Season two debuted on January 12, 2023.

Speculating the Release Date of Vikings Valhalla Season 3

Season 3 of Vikings is still in development, so while there is no official release date yet, it may not be too long until we see the next installment appear on our Netflix home screens.

Seasons 1 and 2 were separated by about 11 months, so if the third installment follows a similar timeline, we can expect it to premiere in late 2023 or early 2024.

Season 2 of Vikings: Valhalla will significantly impact who will return for Season 3, as the show has shown it is willing to murder prominent characters.

Vikings Valhalla: Season 3 Brings Fresh Blood and New Adventures

After the events of last season’s Vikings Valhalla, our warriors went in very different directions. Freydis, one of the few remaining Vikings, has embraced her role as Keeper of the Faith and is now leading the people of Jomsborg.

It is unclear if anyone else will confront Freydis or seek to abduct her young son like Olaf was about to do before Freydis killed him. She has made peace with Aelfgifu, the first wife of King Canute. The rumor that he is Harald’s son and Erik, the Red’s grandson, has spread.

Understandably, Leif feels upset after losing Liv (season one) and Mariam (season two) while holding them. However, Mariam, in her final moments, left him the key to her Constantinople home, telling him it contained all he would need for his future journey in life. This bequest may provide him with the inspiration he needs to continue living.

Just as the historical Leif Eriksson did eventually return to Greenland before continuing to North America, so too may the contents of Mariam’s home in the show assist pay his continued expedition.

Meanwhile, Harald appears to be thrust into a love triangle after learning that Elena, with whom he had a kiss and some meaningful looks, is destined for an arranged marriage with the Emperor of Rome. There was some implication that she was still open to discreet encounters, but we don’t see that going anywhere.

What about Godwin, the schemer who married Princess Gytha, Canute’s niece? Godwin knows that Queen Emma is watching him closely since she has seen what a treacherous and murderous man he can be, yet history shows that he will have his wish granted and have a child of royal blood.

The historical Godwin was the paternal grandfather of King Harold Godwinson, who succeeded his father, Edward the Confessor as monarch of England in January 1066. After a short reign, he was murdered in the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, during the Norman Conquest, making room for William the Conquer to become monarch.

If Vikings Valhalla is renewed for a fourth season, King Harold’s narrative and the subsequent lives of Freydis, Leif, and Harald will be featured on the show. Showrunner Jeb Stuart told Collider he has a big vision for the tale that might extend far beyond season three.

“We’ve tracked, in the storyline, because we can, a little bit of Leif Eriksson’s story, of Freydis’ story. I was always curious how Harald Sigurdsson gets from Harald Sigurdsson to Harald Hardrada,” he explains.

From a historical perspective, Harald was expelled from Scandinavia, making these men outcasts for the rest of their lives; this set a precedent, as it was necessary to establish the Viking heritage in lands other than Scandinavia.

Season three was exactly what I expected it to be. Season three’s setting seemed evident after that cultural shift, as I expected the characters to make their way to the New World by then. What do we need to stock Leif’s toolbox with, and what does Freydis provide to convert these final Pagan holdouts?

And at that time, we were well aware of what was happening in Europe. “So that’s quite exciting for us.” Jeb Stuart will undoubtedly have plenty of exciting storylines to explore if the show continues through season three. Because the tale is so good, we could quickly go for four, five, or even six seasons. He described it to Collider as “almost like a novel.”
