Can’t wait to get your hands on Valkyrie Elysium? It’s not like you’re the only one in this situation. It’s been nearly twenty years since Valkyrie Profile introduced us to the series, and since then Valkyrie has become one of Square Enix’s many JRPG series. The last Norse mythology–themed console game was Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, released in 2009.
With such a dedicated fanbase, Valkyrie Elysium’s comeback is much anticipated. Unlike their predecessors, Profile and Elysium are action role-playing games rather than the more traditional turn-based RPGs. Given that Square Enix accomplished the same thing with Final Fantasy 15 and will do so again with Final Fantasy 16, this is not altogether unexpected.
In any case, you’ve come to the right place if you want to learn more about this upcoming sequel. Here’s everything we know about Valkyrie Elysium so far, from the game’s system requirements to its most important gameplay aspects.
Valkyrie Elysium Release Date and Platforms
On September 29, 2022, Valkyrie Elysium will be available for the PS4 and PS5. It’s free to upgrade to the next-gen edition if you buy the PS4 version, whether digitally or physically. There is currently no word on when Valkyrie Elysium will be on Xbox platforms, but it will be available on Steam for PC on November 11, 2022.

Valkyrie Elysium: Digital Deluxe Edition, like many of Square Enix’s other releases, will have more Valkyrie gear. The PlayStation version of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, however, features a brand new re-release, which is absent from the PC version.
An aside: those who shell out for the Digital Deluxe Edition get to play the game a full 72 hours before everyone else. However, Valkyrie Elysium will be available on September 26 for PS4 and PS5, and on November 8 for PC if that’s your preferred platform.

Valkyrie Elysium Gameplay
Some information on Valkyrie Elysium has been uncovered. While the action RPG style of combat in Elysium may make it feel more like a hack-and-slash than its forerunners, the game nevertheless manages to keep many of the series’ hallmark features.
Our playable Valkyrie has the ability to use both light and heavy one-handed sword attacks over long distances. Careful timing is required for combos that can fling foes across the battlefield or juggle them. Common spells include lightning strikes, healing, and magic dashes that expend magical energy. If you repeatedly strike an opponent, you will activate Crush and temporarily incapacitate them.
Our Valkyrie can use the “Soul Chain” on Elysium to grapple far-off foes and bring them in for a close fight. Also, this can be used to lure foes in for a quick airstrike. They can also call forth an army of Einherjar to aid you in battle, each of whom will employ a unique brand of elemental harm.
Valkyrie Elysium Setting and Characters
While we know that Valkyrie Elysium takes set in the same universe as the previous games, we don’t know much else about it at this time. As of right now, it’s unknown if any of the major characters from before are returning, but we’re out to halt Ragnarök and traveling the world looking for lost warrior spirits to build a team of Einherjar. Even in the most recent batch of trailers based on the prologue, the name of the playable Valkyrie was never revealed.
In any case, these previews suggest that the plot of Valkyrie Elysium is not overly connected to the events of the previous games in the series. Therefore, there is no need for hesitance on the part of those who would like to dive right in. From the official website, we also have a synopsis given by Square Enix:
“Long ago, Ragnarok—the End Times—loomed upon the realms. The All-Father Odin, with the last of his strength, created an emissary of redemption, Valkyrie; her sole task was the salvation of a doomed world. And thence began the tale of a new Valkyrie.”
Valkyrie Elysium PC Requirements
If you’re playing on a PS4 or PS5, you don’t need to worry about compatibility issues. But we have some disappointing news for those who have purchased Valkyrie Elysium for the PC. Square Enix has yet to announce the minimum and recommended PC specifications for Valkyrie Elysium, despite the fact that only two months remain till the release date.
Publishers frequently wait until less than a month before release to announce something like this to the public. Those who were hoping to pre-order this new action RPG are now in for an even tougher time. When further information becomes available, we will update this article with it.
