Sims 5 Features: Although it’s currently known as Project Rene, The Sims 5 has been officially announced. Project Rene, the “new future” of the series, is formally developing at both EA and Maxis.
The Sims’ vice president of franchise creative Lyndsay Pearson says the new project will “reimagine The Sims you know and love with new ways to play,” with “charming Sims,” “powerful tools,” and “meaningful stories” as its cornerstones.
The announcement of The Sims 4’s free-to-play base game, followed by The Sims Project Rene’s unveiling, was a clear sign that EA and Maxis were gearing up for the next installment in the series. Fans were divided over the decision, but some saw it as a sign of things to come in The Sims 5.

The Sims 5 is Project Rene
Previously known as Project Rene, The Sims 5 has been unveiled to the public. Although its release is still a few years away, we have been given a taste of what to expect from the “next generation of Sims game and creative platform.”
Pearson explained at the original reveal at the Behind the Sims Summit in October that they had settled on the name Project Rene because it “reminisces of words like renewal, renaissance, and rebirth” and thus represented the studio’s “renewal” of its dedication to The Sims. We’re bringing The Sims into the future with a fresh take on the gameplay and more.
To adapt to the future, “we need to stay true to what The Sims has always been while pushing to evolve how those Sims think and behave; to push tools further when creating and customizing; and to explore innovative ways not only to tell stories but to collaborate on those stories and creations with your closest friends across your favorite devices.”
The Sims 5 release date
Players are being let into the Project Rene secret “earlier than ever before” because Maxis “want you to be a part of the development journey” for The Sims 5, but there is currently no set release date.
According to Pearson, “this is super early for us, and we’ve never shared information about our games years before launching to the world,” so the reveal of Project Rene “marks the start of our journey over the next few years.” That means the release of Project Rene is likely several years away, if not longer.
The Sims 5 is planned to have “Story” and “Narrative” Features!

The Sims 5 platforms
Maxis hasn’t announced what platforms The Sims 5 will be available on at launch, but during the Project Rene reveals, the game was shown running on what appeared to be a PC and a mobile device. Pearson says, “We want you to be able to play with whoever you want, whenever you want.”
A demo was shown at the Behind the Sims Summit that demonstrated “how you can play this game across supported devices of your choosing,” with the player placing furniture on a smartphone screen and seeing those changes reflected instantly on a monitor (presumably a PC). Providing the “same experience [on] different screens” is the target.
This could mean that, unlike previous core Sims titles, The Sims 5 will be available on multiple platforms simultaneously rather than being PC-exclusive at launch.

The Sims 5 features
Maxis has only given us a glimpse of what The Sims 5/Project Rene will be like. Most of the first look at Behind the Sims Summit focused on the development of Build Mode’s creative tools, demonstrating how players will be able to choose not only the color and pattern of items (like a more nuanced version of The Sims 3’s Create-a-Style) but also the shape of objects.
Beds were used as an example, with the option to pick between a single and double size and then customize the headboard and footboard to your liking.
They also displayed a sofa that allowed the user to select between a solid back and base, a segmented back and bottom, or combine the two. This is a massive deal for constructors because you can customize your sofa down to the throw cushions.
Moreover, Maxis hinted at the new sharing features by mentioning the possibility of sharing a cluster of furniture and other items rather than an entire room or complete build. “Our goal with Project Rene is to streamline collaboration and information dissemination. It’s up to you if you want to play or create alone or with a small group of friends, “Pearson elucidated.
