According to the reports, the person who would be found offending the rule or consuming any tobacco product on the premises of the temple after December 31, 2023, will be charged with penalties and fines. The chief administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, Ranjan Kumar Das, announced on Wednesday the complete ban on paan, gutka and other tobacco products. He said the ban would be strictly implemented for devotees, temple employees, and servitors. Nevertheless, the authorities of the temple will first create some sort of awareness over non-consumption of the tobacco products before strictly implementing a ban from January 1, 2024. The chief administrator Ranjan Kumar Das said, “Awareness over non-consumption of ‘paan’ and ‘gutka’ on the temple premises will be carried out in November and December, while the prohibition will come into force from January 1. The penalty will be imposed on the offenders,” The SJTA has also written a letter to the apex body of servitors, ‘Chhattisa Nijog’, over the matter. In a letter to the servitors’ body, it is said that though there is already the provision of penalty for consumption of such items inside the temple compound, “no one was obeying the rule”. The SJTA last month announced it would enforce a dress code for devotees from next year.
