Lionel Messi, the legendary Argentinian FIFA World Cup winner, was honored with the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for the eighth time on October 30. This award serves as a tribute to his exceptional performances throughout his career, especially as he approaches the twilight of his illustrious journey, as reported by ANI. Messi, who currently represents Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first MLS player to receive this accolade. The award was presented to Messi by the English football icon and owner of Inter Miami, David Beckham. Born in Santa Fe, Argentina, Messi made his debut in 2004, and his remarkable career spans almost 30 years. He had previously clinched the Ballon d’Or award eight times in the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2021.

His journey had its share of heartbreak when his team faced defeat in the 2014 World Cup. However, eight years later, Messi channeled the spirit of Maradona and redeemed himself by winning the World Cup trophy and bringing it back to Argentina. Messi’s seven goals in the World Cup tournament reignited hope among fans, especially following Argentina’s unexpected loss to Saudi Arabia. He went on to defeat France in the World Cup final and also became the leading assist provider in Ligue 1 for the French powerhouse, Paris Saint-Germain.

Lionel Messi also clinched the Laureus Award for the best male athlete of 2022, surpassing other prominent athletes like Rafael Nadal, Kylian Mbappe, and Stephen Curry. This marked his second Laureus win, often compared to a sports equivalent of an Oscar. His initial Laureus recognition came in 2020 when he shared the award with British Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton. In addition, Messi was celebrated during the Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony in February, where he was honored with the title of Best Men’s Player.
